In general:

1. Ask people! - There are lots of funding opportunities other people might have heard of.
2. Ask your profs! - They need to know you are interested. They are often eager to help interested students.
   They also might raise some money from their own funds.
3. Think ahead! - Most deadlines are early! Some deadlines are one year ahead.
4. Apply everywhere! - There is nothing but to say you never know if you get the money. Ask your people for lots of references!!

• General Help: Uni Tuebingen Akademischer Austausch
• Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes
A: always, you need to be suggested, less rigid for PhD
S: Germans, undergrad and PhD
M: not that much, don't cover fees!, but can be combined with DAAD scholarship !!
P: length of degree

• DAAD
A: one year in advance !!! (Sept.)
S: Germans going abroad, others coming to Germany, don't like to support PhDs (only one year)
M: not much as undergrad, sufficient as postgrad (after Diploma), cover fees!!!
P: one year
• Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds
  A: 3 times a year (April, August, ...)
  S: not only Germans, biologically/medically related fields, PhD
  P: 36 months max.
  M: gooooooood!
  
• Konrad Adenauer / Friedrich Ebert / ... Stiftung
  A: usually once a year (early!!!)
  S: Germans, politically active people
  
• Sokrates/Erasmus - check out your current university
  A: only during course at some university (undergrad)
  S: participating countries - disadvantage: you cannot choose freely where you want to go to
  M: hardly any
  P: one year at most

• Cambridge University Board of Graduate Studies
  Check their handbook for appropriate funding opportunities
  
• Cambridge Gates Scholarship
  A: EARLY
  S: everybody
  M: cover fees, okay
  P: length of course (postgrad)
  
• Cambridge Commonwealth/European Trust
  A: once/twice a year, EARLY!!!
  S: well, Commonwealth or European people
  M: cover fees, quite good
  P: length of course (postgrad)
  
• College Scholarships (rich Colleges)
  Trinity
  St. John's
  Queen's
  There is always the possibility to let the fees being paid by one party and the maintenance cost by somebody else!
